CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE ROTARACT PROGRAM IN NORTH AMERICA vin
the America-Canada-Caribbean Together (ACCT) Multi-District Informational Organization, founded in 2002, was revived this past Rotary year. ACCT operates under the guidelines set forth in 1998 by the RI Board of Directors. Sixteen MDIOs throughout the world serve as information coordination organizations whch promotes the growth of Rotaract by employing the talents of experienced Rotaract district leaders on a larger scale, much as Rotary does with its Zones.
In fact, our ACCT MDIO uses the Rotary zone pairings in our own structure, having Rotaract Directors for Zones 22, 23-24 (including Alaska & Siberia), 25-26, 27-28, 29-30, 31-32, 33-34 and a separate Director for the Caribbean Districts. We potentially have 170 districts in all, making us by far the largest of the 16 MDIOs in the world today. In keeping with President Wilf’s focus on youth, we need your specific help in getting our message to your districts. And we have a powerful message: Rotaract IS the future of Rotary; we will join Rotary from our communities when we turn 30 years old as committed, experienced community service members who know and respect the programme of Rotary. Most of us are young professionals already into our careers; our leadership is primarily in our mid to late twenties and we belong to community-based clubs that serve exactly the same purpose and in the same manner as do our sponsoring Rotary clubs, who are our partners in service. But all too few Rotary leaders see us in the same way in North America as the vast majority of Rotaract clubs exist in other countries as community-based clubs, where a highly organized and active group of Rotaract leaders at the multi-district and national levels are a dynamic part of the entire Rotary programme. We need to be an integral part of every multi-district programme you have in your zones, from PETS to leadership Assemblies, from Zone Institutes to the International Assembly (where Rotaractor Rod Brown was a keynote speaker last year to the entire class of incoming DGS) We feel our leadership should have been invited to participate at the recent Presidential Membership conferences; in some cases, Rotaractors who just “showed up” made a powerful impact with hastily arranged two-to-ten-minute presentations. If only we had been provided the time to show you how we are using our web sites, the internet and other novel methods to attract members. But the message must be focused: Only our experienced MDIO leadership is prepared to answer ALL the questions that are pertinent: • Just how does a Rotary leader promote Rotaract in their communities? • How do we develop district Rotaract organizations and train Rotaract district leaders? and • How do your Rotary districts join ACCT MDIO officially so your Rotaractors can become actively engaged in multi-district leadership development?
