220+ countries and geographical areas....
If only a single reason existed for supporting Rotary, that would be the signature, unique, global POLIO PLUS campaign. Polo Plus, which began as a pilot project by Rotarians to immunise 500,000 children in the Philippines in 1980, was adopted by Rotary in 1985 as a commitment to eradicate polio. Three years later, after Rotary had raised an initial $240 million to fund the purchase of vaccine, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was adopted by a broad coaltion of health agencies brought together by incorporating the resources of WHO, CDC, UNICEF -- and, more recently, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as partners in this massive effort. Rotary has spearheaded and manned volunteer-driven projects and National Immunisation Days [NIDs] in 130 countries. Rotarians have been the dominant force in funding and delivering nearly three BILLION doses of polio vaccine to the children of the world..... and in the process have raised over 800 million dollars from their Rotarian colleagues to pay for the purchase and safe cold storage handling of vaccine throughout the world!
... Yet because of my own experience with sight impairedness, my focus and passion is to support "Gift of Sight" experience.
